A Quick Checklist for Improving Your Life

1. Learn About You

If you don't know who you are and why you think and act the way you do, it's gonna be really difficult to make any positive changes in your life. Take a look first at your parents and close family members. Think about how they look and how they deal with life. This is the basis for who you are today. You've been instilled with the tendency to think as they think and act as they act. It's just the way it is.

Now think about the big events in your life so far. The ones that stand out in your mind. The ones that made an impression - negative or positive - on you. These events have likely influenced how you think and act today. Oh sure, we can add in every little thing that you've ever seen, heard, felt, smelled or touched because "everything" has had some effect on you - on how you think and deal with life. But it's the "biggies" that usually have the most impact.

You can write some of this down if you want to. Make a list of things you like or don't like. Things you enjoy doing. Things that make you happy or sad. But you don't need to if you'd rather not. Just thinking about this is a major step in the right direction. Just get to know you. It's important.

2. Learn About Others

You already know now why you are you. Think about why other people think and act as they do. It should be fairly simple because they're who and what they are for the same reasons you are who you are. They've just had a different family and life experiences. Therefore, they'll all act at least somewhat differently - and think differently - than you. Why spend the time learning about others? Well because - the more you learn about why other folks think and act as they do, the more you'll learn about yourself. And that's still important.

3. Practice Thinking Differently

If you continue to think the same way as you do right now, nothing can change. Everything we do is based on how we think - about ourselves, about others and about life. If you think life is pretty crappy, well sure enough, it'll be pretty crappy. If you think life is generally OK, sure enough, it'll be generally OK. If you think you're a loser, you are. If you think you have a lot to offer your friends, family and this world, you do. We think our way to our destiny. What's your destiny?

4. Pour a Solid Foundation

You can't build much of anything without a strong foundation structure. Roads, buildings, bridges, cars, life - all require a firm foundation to last and withstand the eroding elements of nature. If you haven't already, you might consider looking into using a spiritually-based concrete for your foundation. (No, I didn't say religious but if that's your preference, use it.) Strong values and principles can provide reinforcement. If you'll continue to work to add strength to your under-footing as you go through life, you'll have all the support you'll ever need.

5. Build a New Life

Use whatever references you think you need to start - and continue - your building process. There are plenty of organizations, schools and references of all types available to help you on your way. Find the experts and listen to their stories and advice. Identify a mentor, coach or a close friend who can give you lots of support and encouragement. And be sure to DO SOMETHING! ACT! All the information and knowledge is worthless unless you put it to work for you. Decide what you would like your destiny to be. Then just go for it!

What Can Your Business Do to Help After Disaster Strikes?

After the Northridge, CA Earthquake apartment buildings were leveled, many people had perished and there was no power or water for weeks in so many areas. The Freeways were closed and there was absolute gridlock, it was difficult to even get supplies in to help the victims. Folks were forced from their homes into parks where tents were set up, luckily the weather was not so bad in California.

Most all the businesses in the region were shut down. After all, how can you run a business without any power? Some businesses had generators, they could operate but no one could get into work with the roads out. It was a living hell for most small businesses. Many of them did what they could to help the clean-up efforts and lend assistance any way they could. At the time my company was delivering water to victims.

The Earthquake victims who could stay in their homes, houses that were not damaged beyond living conditions had no water, so we filled up trash cans lined in plastic, so they could have drinking water and could sponge themselves off and perhaps clean a few dishes, using the left over dirty water to water their plants. So, I guess my question to you is; If your business is out of commission and you cannot work, what is your plan to help victims in the region during this time?

You see, not only do you need a plan to help yourself, you need a plan to help others too because if you cannot work for yourself and you are forced out of business, you should be using your resources, knowledge and skills to help the community in their time of need. Please consider this thought, and have a plan.

Electrician Schools - Get Hot Wired For Success

There are millions of homes, schools, businesses and other buildings that are wired for electricity. One thing they all have in common is that someone had to install all of that wiring - an electrician. Electricians are always in high demand all over the U.S. because they are always needed somewhere to either install new electrical wiring, or to maintain and repair existing wiring. If you are interested in becoming an electrician, you must have a skilled electrician teach you, or better still, enroll into a certified electrician school.

Electrician schools are recommended if you really wish to learn everything there is to know about how electricity works, and how to safely work with it. Because working with hot electrical wires is a risky affair, you need all the training you can get before entering into this field. You may have already had the opportunity to watch a professional working in your local community when the electricity goes out in a neighborhood. It's the electrician's job to go out and physically handle the electrical cables on those big jobs, get them reconnected and hook everything back up so electricity can be restored. You cannot do a job like that without having confidence that you can avoid getting a severe electrical shock.

Building developers also hire electricians to complete wiring for their many projects. Sometimes an electrician gets called in to fix faulty wiring in a home to prevent a fire. Faulty electrical wiring, done by inexperienced workers, can lead to a dangerous situation that could cause a family's house to burn down. As a well-trained electrician, you can fix the problem and keep people safe. These are just some of the real life scenarios that electrician schools prepare you to deal with in the real world.

Unlike other career fields that have a high turnover, or lack job security, once you become a certified electrician, you will have the opportunity to work on many different job projects. If you choose to work for a company right out of school, you can earn around $18 to $27 per hour. Most likely you'll start out at the low end, then as you gain on the job experience, your rate of earnings will increase. The schooling and certification definitely work to your advantage, as you will be seen as a professional who has more training than non-certified electricians.

You also have the option of being your own boss and hiring yourself out as an independent contractor. In any case, those who are in need of your services will always appreciate your skills. Electrician schools do a great job in teaching their students how to install and maintain all facets of electrical wiring, and how to use all of the latest equipment and techniques. By attending a trade school, you are going to be miles ahead of others in this field that never bothered to get properly trained.

By taking this trade seriously, you will prove that you have what it takes to establish yourself in this time-honored career. You will also experience lots of job satisfaction from being an expert who is respected for what they do. Most people don't have the patience or courage to learn this particular trade, which gives you a huge advantage. If you are naturally curious, good with your hands, can concentrate on intricate details and are fascinated by electricity, becoming a certified electrician is a good career choice for your talents and abilities.

A History of Skateboarding

We are taking a walk down memory lane and looking at the history of skateboarding. It started off as "side-walk surfing" and was closely related to surfing back then, a kind of offshoot. Fact is that skateboards we are pretty sure originated in California, so you can see the connection.

They were developed at first it is believed in the 1940's, but only began to gain popularity in the 1960's onwards. Surfers used them as a kind of dry surfing run, and kids who couldn't get to the beach found skateboarding as the next best thing. The first skateboards were surfboard shaped, but the board widened as people started using skateboards more inventively, and ramps started being used.

The history of skateboarding shows us that once skateboard parks came onto the scene things really started to rock and roll! People started all sorts of cool tricks. They started doing nose wheelies, which is riding on the front wheels, and the 360 was invented, which is spinning around on the back wheels. I hope this isn't dullsville for you, but I like finding out about the history of skateboarding, its neat to know how things are connected, and how sports develop and grow.

The ollie was the first skateboard trick of the modern era, and after the ollie things really hotted up. If ya don't know what the ollie is, it is to fly off the ground with the board, but not holding onto the board, and then landing back on the board. You can use your feet to press against the board in all types of ways for various maneuvers and tricks. This must have been ultra exciting when this was first created. By the way,do you know where the name of the ollie came from? It was the creators middle name Alan Ollie Gelfand.

So that's a brief history of skateboarding. It doesn't always get the respect it deserves for the complexity and subtlety of the tricks and the imaginative moves.

Using Sustainable Materials For Renovations

Before we can fully understand the use and importance of sustainable materials in renovations, we have to learn what it is first and why is there such big fuzz about its use.

What are sustainable materials?

These are green materials. A perfect example of sustainable material is the bamboo. This means that once you use them, they will be able to replenish or generate their kind. Thus, it will not compromise the environment. However, you should not leave the replenishing to the materials alone. You have to take part in its development by ensuring that as they regenerate themselves, they have the necessary nutrients to grow strong and healthy.

Why use sustainable materials?

A lot of groups have been encouraging the use of these materials. You might ask why? So what if the materials you use are unable to replenish themselves, at least you get the chance to use them, right? Wrong! If everyone thinks this way, just think of how the world will look ten years from now? We are slowly experiencing the wrath of nature because most of us failed to take care of it. If we do not do our share today, the results in the future could be catastrophic.

You can contribute in saving our environment by using sustainable materials whenever you can. Using such materials during renovations is a big help. Just think of how many people renovate their homes. There are few aspects of sustainable you can consider to ensure that you are environmentally responsible. Some of them are identified below.

If you are to renovate your home, use locally developed sustainable materials. It has to be found in your localities to reduce the travel time, expenses and energy. Keep in mind that transporting materials will still create problems in the environment. Automobiles use gas and it emits toxic substances that harm the environment.

You also have to keep important points in mind when choosing materials for the renovation. As much as possible, it should create minimal damage to the environment. They should not only be renewable, they have to be non-toxic as well. Most importantly, they have to be recyclable. Bear in mind that the renovations you make will not last forever. Other changes will be made in the future. The materials you will use should not add more waste. Instead, other people should find different means to use it.

If you are having a difficult time figuring out what to use, consult Green Architects. You will be surprised with the number of choices they have available for you. They can even look around your property and find materials that you can use for the renovation. They can also help you find a supplier. Finding the right supplier is essential to ensure that you get the materials you want. You have to let them know what you need. Most suppliers are not used to sustainable materials. This is why homeowners should help in raising awareness.

All of us have to be environmentally responsible. Our choices will help make that happen. The use of sustainable materials will help restore our natural resources.

What You Need To Know About Student Loans and Finances

Often, when a student starts to prepare for college, they do not realize what it entailed, and how overwhelmed they will be before the process is over.

The student loan process is a long and arduous process that most often will have to be repeated for multiple loans. Choosing the right loans and lenders will take a lot of time and research.

Government loans are offered to combat the rising cost of education. They realize that students and families cannot afford college on their own, and that it would be too much of a hardship to try.

Federal student loans given to students with the contract terms stating that the loans will be repaid when the student graduates from college. The standard repayment time is up to ten years.

Monthly payments are generally what the student pays, and the amount is in accordance to their income. There are some repayment plans that will raise their payment every couple of years because in the real world, raises and promotions occur frequently.

Keep in mind that with federal student loans comes a very high interest rate. This rate is figured into the loan repayment and over a ten-year period, can far exceed the original loan amount.

Other types of student loans include a parent loan and a private student loan. A parent loan is just as the name indicates. The parent or parents may borrow money to cover tuition for college, however one of the major drawbacks to a parent loan is that once the loan has been approved, the repayment process starts immediately.

A private student loan involves the student applying to a bank or lending institution. Once approved the student can attend college worry free until he or she graduates. The repayment process for a private student loan is only six months however in some instances, it can be extended for up to one year at the discretion of the lending institution.

With the rising costs of higher education growing everyday, students and their families need to know what they are facing when it comes to student financing. It is crucial that you do as much research and ask as many question as necessary for you to be comfortable with your choices.

Once you have signed the application and then the contract, you are legally responsible for the repayment process. Good luck with your schooling!

The C Programming Language

Programs that execute operating system or processor related tasks usually need to be written in assembly, since such endeavors are not possible with most high level programming languages. The C language has been developed based on the need to write programs that use machine resources in an easier and more portable way that assembly.

C's popularity stems from the ease with which is adds its power of low level programming with a high level of portability, making its source programs reusable regardless of the architecture used, as long as a compiler is available. C combines the concepts from assembly and high level languages, allowing for program control and the use of data structures in a way similar to other high level languages, while at the same time making it possible to perform tasks usually only accessible to assembly programmers.

These features of the C language are important when choosing a programming language for a new project, as with C programming one can explore hardware resources without much knowledge of the assembly language for the target architecture.

Incorporating concepts from programming languages such as BASIC, FORTRAN and PASCAL, C is derived from ALGOL68, and was designed in 1972 at the Bell Labs by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Richie for the UNIX operating system.

Some features of the C programming language are:

a high degree of portability, allowing for source code to be reused on different architectures without much modification it is a general purpose language, efficient for programming utilities as well as operating systems, word processors, database, and general purpose applications generates compact and fast executable code in comparison to the other compiled languages permits interaction with the operating system and insertion of assembly in the source code it is a structured and modular language and supports the use of modern programming techniques

The C programming language is currently used in the most diverse applications. UNIX compatible operating systems have approximately 90% of their code written in C.

Flight Deck, Volume 1, First Edition - By, Edward Atkins

"Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts. It means freedom from thinking about yourself at all. ~ William Temple"

In Flight Deck: A Pictorial Essay of a Day in the Life of an Airdale (Volume I, Second Edition) Edward Atkins narrates his thoughts to the reader in a humble fashion of wisdom, insight and honesty. In his book which is a monumental achievement to the Navy, he reflects back to his service during 1945 and 1946 aboard the Essex-class aircraft carrier the U.S.S. Antietam (CV-36), honorably named after the Civil War battle that claimed 23,000 casualties, the bloodiest single day in American history.

As a curator in a museum would take patrons throughout the exhibits and add insight resulting in a higher appreciation and understanding, Edward Atkins curates his book of Naval Archive photographs with his personal story, impressions and insight. His words are captivating as it becomes clearly evident to the reader that each and every word, thought and opinion is there for the reader's benefit, not for the author's. As there is just so much time a man has in life, it is important to pass along to others the essence of what has happened; how men have created this world in which we inhabit, and why things are the way they are. From the onset of Edward Atkins' remarks asking "forgiveness" for typographical oversights due to his physical limitations, to his closing salute, "Antietam, Hail and Farewell," the reader is brought into a first-hand diary of how life was upon a ship created for a sole purpose of warfare.

An "Airdale" is crew on the flight deck of a carrier. A lackluster job of perfunctory repetition, moving and securing aircraft; it is as important as any small gear in a machine without which the mechanism would cease to operate. Furthermore, Edward Atkins does not in any way make himself out to be a hero, as clearly in the onset he states that the word "Veteran" applies to those that have been in combat, and his role was "ancillary" to the war effort. Although one never knows if the enemy is just over the horizon, this is not a book of war stories. The focus of the book is dealing with the inner workings of the carrier, along with the task force provided for support and protection.

The photographs depict the carrier in all of its glory, at sea and in port, with the anonymity of the men which bring these metal skeletons of force to life. Almost every photograph has been taken from the National Archives. Most interestingly, Edward Atkins writes a narration for each photograph using two distinct "voices." One being the seasoned gentleman of elder years, with the historical knowledge and wisdom earned through his life's achievements and research. Then one of an impressionable young man of 18 and 19 years of age, serving in the Navy aboard an aircraft carrier; a man-made creation of immense design excellence of "form following function." This dichotomy of wisdom and emotion, coupled with the bountiful photographs of exquisite detail, result in an experience one cannot gain nowadays any other way than to read Flight Deck.

This three volume set should be a proud gift to all those entering the military, especially the Navy and Coast Guard, as well as all of the younger generation with an interest in history, technology or warfare. Citizens enjoying the freedom so ardently achieved through the sacrifice and fortitude of those of Edward Atkins' generation have a need-to-know the inner workings of men performing jobs on the deck of ships which have shaped our history. Flight Deck is a tribute to all that served, as we salute you.
